big stuff ...

For several months ...
I've had to stay quiet about what was going on
with my stitching.
Not anymore!!
TADA !!
Introducing
"My Passion"

akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
I've been designing this piece in my head for years,
I think.
There are re invented elements from past pieces,
with new additions ... just because.
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
If you have known me in my design life ....
You'll recognize this panel as a new version
from a charted design I released in 1998 called
Mothers' Rocker.
This version is more hip in it's color way with
changes to the background.  The new variety of threads
made for some beautiful transitions to a painted surface.
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
There was no such thing as Silken Straw back in '98!
Nor was there a color called Oregano from Kreinik!

Sooooo .... if you do indeed remember me from my
beginnings in this industry ... I was a young punk with
so many ideas.  Now I'd like to think I'm a
wee bit wiser and wow, turning 60!
Still a rebel, still living the dream of
doing what I love!

Come help me celebrate with my fabulous
long time friend and distributor
Ruth Schmuff at her magical
BeeHive in Maryland
June 15, 16, and 17!!

Reinventing the wheel ...

 Sometimes ...
when designing ...
it almost feels
like you have to reinvent the wheel!
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
These wavy subjects tested me ...
this is when I hear myself telling a student,
"Get up and walk away from it for a moment."
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
I get these brilliant ideas,
they're completely formed in my head ...
then the search begins for
'that thread' and 'that color of bead'

It can be exciting like a treasure hunt
or
it can frustrate the heck out of moi!
Of course, the brilliant idea when put
to needle and stitch after finding all
of the above
MAY NOT WORK!!

This is when my teacher voice comes to me
loud and clear ...
walk away for a bit Kimberly!

Voila! Perfect!

Little Bits...

Sometimes a girl just has to play.
Revisiting the way I would play with string ...
I've come to the conclusion that I have an
oddly put together brain ...
no kidding, right?!?!

Of course, you benefit in the play of my cosmic brain.

Introducing my latest exercise
"Little Bits of String"

akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
Three in a row
or
single on their own canvas.
Fun, quick, about 2.5"sq designs.
I'll be teaching these as pop up workshops for
The Black Sheep
in Orlando.
Classes will be held on
the second Saturday of each month
or
the last Wednesday.
Call 407 . 894 . 0444
or click the link for details.

I stitched these in Soie Perlee
but you can use any fine single strand
thread of a similar size.
Your choice in colors and canvas!
They can become ornaments or bits of
contemporary art framed up with a wide mat.

Sunny Sunday...

akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
On this beautiful Sunday morning,
as I sat down to focus on painting.
This one became a total distraction for me.
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
I finally did get painting.
Little Dancer©2014
Progress is progress
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
The border on this design was a bugger
to count out...
so of course, it's also a belt now.
Snail Trail©2014
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
With some to spare! Truly thought I would run out of steam or thread working these swirly bullion curves.
Thankfully neither was an issue!
And I
LOVE the way they turned out.
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
Next up, finish the coils and the
tiny red ribbon flowers.
Then to figure out a stitch for the background,
already have something in mind for the pink flowers
....you'll see :-)

all is quiet...

I'm super busy designing and super excited about teaching in Baltimore in November. Time just keeps rushing by!

stitch by stitch...

In between playing with my grandbaby,
a little stitching on Blossom.
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
Sometimes a groan comes from my stitching spot. I'm loving the play of the Memory Wire. Love the beaded background of the light green area. Don't ask me what I'm going to do with the big dots yet.  Underneath the coil is a smooth spiderweb that didn't turn out the way my minds eye saw it. The coil is fun but will lose its fun'ness' when I attach it with couching.
I'm also obsessing over the red dots. I've lost track of how much ribbon I've wasted. Right now they are worked in Montano Ribbon Knots. Basically everything I've ever taught anyone about making a French Knot, FORGET.
Many loose wraps,
do not hold the end of the thread taut...
DO NOT pull firmly.
They are to be fluffy, loopy knots.
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
Beginnings.
This tiny dancer will be a companion piece
to my 'Emma's Pillow' design.
This is what I do when stitching frustrates me,
grab my pencils!

It can happen, Ruth has a class time set for November.

I know we're going to have a blast
at the shop with the lime green walls!!

Bedecked and Beadazzled [scroll down page]
it's happening...November 8 and 9!
akimberlydesign.blogspot.com
Beyond the very cool 3D copper mesh wings,
there are the top and bottom borders. I've explored all kinds of different stitch techniques, to keep you going on this design.  Threads run from simple cotton to plied silk to wool/silk blend, silk perle, metallics, and just a few beads!
I love teaching classes as it gives me the opportunity to meet so many of you and have a more personal connection to what all of you are wanting in your stitching.
So I hope you'll join us for a weekend of sheer
delight in stitching fun.
